| APRIL 25 - CIVFD recently hosted 10 Boy Scouts from the Charles County Zekiah District Boy Scouts for a tour of the fire house and firefighting equipment and fire safety.
Boy Scouts from across Charles County recently assembled for a weekend "Camperoo" at the Mirant park facility near the Nice Bridge. As part of the weekend event, they divided up to earn different merit badges. One group visited the Cobb Island Fire/EMS Department on Saturday afternoon, April 25, 2009 to learn about firefighting and fire safety, to fulfill the earning requirements for the Fire Safety Merit Badge. Cobb Island was happy to be able to give the Boy Scouts a tour of the fire house and our equipment, and to explain about how the different fire vehicles were used in firefighting and fire safety services.
Firefighter/EMT Robert Higgs, Jr. was their host and showed them our heavy duty fire trucks and equipment and answered their questions about fire fighting and fire prevention. Assisting in the visit, Firefighter C.J. Lancaster was able to demonstrate the firefighter's turn-out gear and how the SCBA breathing unit works (and helped each to have the opportunity to gear up in turnout gear). Fire Cadet Luke Chapman did a walk around of our brush fire trucks and the special gear used on them. Firefighters Eddie Payne and Lisa Payne were able to answer additional questions about fire engines and took the scout troop and Zekiah District Scout Leader Marcus Montes for a brief tour around Cobb Island aboard Engine 61. EMT Rick Pike assisted learning about firefighting and fire safety by helping to explain and interpret some of the more technical items for them, and discussed education and training required for firefighting.
We hope that what these Boy Scouts learned will help them to earn their Fire Safety Merit Badges and that they will become involved with their local fire and rescue squads in the future. |
