My history with your fire department goes back almost to it's inception in 1946. My parents (Fred & Helen Thorne) had a home on the island, and I grew up there, especially during the summers. I fished, crabbed, etc. and salt water runs in my veins. I made a trip back east to Maryland several weeks ago. My girlfriend, Nanette Wise and I, had a tour of your fire department, and I must say that what I observed was top notch. The person giving the tour (Will Lawman Jr., Deputy EMS Chief) was very informative, and generously gave me a patch. I know that fire departments trade patches, and I would like to send one of our patches to you in return for your hospitality. My fire service history goes back many years here in Arizona (EMT, firefighter both structure and wildland, arson, inspection, and fire board) and can appreciate all that you do for your community. Thank you for reading my ramblings, and please give a big thank you to Will Lawman Jr. who made the tour of your department possible.

Keep up the good work, I was lucky enough to start my FireFighting career with
Co-6 back in 1973 when I was maybe 16. I had a great time learning the ropes from a very good group of guys. I've had a great time in my career on both sides of the street being a career and volunteer. I remember Jimmy telling me that when its not fun anymore its time to go, well after 27+ years it's still fun. If theres any thing I can tell you, it would be this. If your in this to become a career firefighter or if your going to be a volunteer, just do the job well or don't do it at all. Yall be safe and keep saving lives and fighting fires. Till next time see ya.

Hi, I am a volunteer firefighter in Long Island, New York. My department is about 15 miles outside of New York City. I have close friends who have moved down into your district, and I am thinking about visiting some time during the summer. I am probably going to check out your firehouse etc. while I am visiting.

Thanks, your fellow firefighter from up north.

Billy was a dear friend and will be greatly missed. We will remember his jokes, hunting adventures, and trip to pickup the pontoon boat. He made the trip to Virginia one to remember. We laughed so hard, and shared many stories. The poor waitress at the Waffle House, will surely remember him. Our favorite jokes are him telling the about the "seeing eye dog" and the "stuttering parachutist". Many a night before a hunting trip, you'd find him snuggled up on our coach, just waiting for Butch to come down and wake him up. He got a kick out of Tyler mistakingly calling him "Daddy". Tyler still asks for Billy and when is he coming by to see him. I don't have the heart and know he is too young to understand. He was also one to gather the group up for dinner on Tuesday's since no one else could decide where to eat. Boy, could he make a mess (food fights). He always had a smile and that goofy look on his face..that was our Billy Goat or Monkey Boy #1. There is so much we could share for the adventures..and so much we never will get to do again with him. One thing, Butch never got to do was actually get out and go crabbing or fishing with him. It was one thing they promised to do after his surgery.
We will end this brief story of our lives with Billy, But know he is always in our hearts and Mr. & Mrs. Swann, and family are in our prayers. If anything is ever needed by them, please don't hesitate to call.

Love always,

Butch (Monkey Boy #2), Linda & Tyler Gregory

Thank you for sharing Billy with us. We loved him very much. We were all so fortunate to have him in our lives. When I think of Billy, which is very, often I think of the lessons in life that he taught me - gentleness, love, compassion, and always putting others before yourself. At the end he taught me how fleeting life is, what is truly important in life and to cherish friends and family. Family was the most important thing in Billy's life. He loved his family more than words could express. Fortunately for the members of Cobb Island Volnteer Fire Department, Charles County Rescue Squad, and NDW, he made us all members of his extended family and loved us. I will end this E-Mail as I ended every phone conversation with Billy. "I love you Billy Goat.""

That huge smile as well as his nutty, crazy and caring personality are just a few things that will be missed during future Autumn Glory's in Oakland by all of Billy's friends here. We will cherish and hold on to the memories we have of Billy forever. His family should be so proud of the fun and caring person he was and the accomplishments he made in his life. We will miss him dearly. Our prayers and thoughts are with each and every one of you.
