After tonight’s storm passed through Cobb Island, CIVFD volunteers staffed the station and stayed ready to respond. A short time later, units were dispatched for arcing wires at High Avenue and Piedmont Drive.
Crews arrived to find a large tree down across power lines, creating a serious hazard. Members secured the area and stood by as SMECO removed the tree from the lines. The tree has since been moved to the side of the roadway, but drivers and pedestrians should continue to use caution in the area.
🚨 While handling this incident, another call came in for a large tree that had fallen on private property elsewhere on the island. Our crew responded to check for life safety concerns and confirmed that the tree was not on the home and had not compromised the structure.
Storm Safety Reminders:
🚫 Never approach downed or hanging wires. 📞 Report arcing, smoke, or downed lines immediately to 911. 💡 During power outages:
Use flashlights instead of candles.
Keep generators outside and away from your home.
Unplug electronics and keep fridge doors closed.
Thank you to all the volunteers who stayed ready tonight and to SMECO for their fast response.
